Slow Cooker Meat Sauce

Jan 19, 2013

Good Morning everyone. We've had a bit of a whirlwind couple days... Daniel had to grocery shop/prepare food and pack for a fishing trip with some friends and our little man has been teething so we haven't had the happiest of days around here. In my opinion 3 teeth at once is a little harsh on our poor guy.

So today I would like to talk about this...

I've started using my slow cooker a lot when Daniel's gone. It's by far the easiest way for me to get supper on the table while managing a crabby baby, a whining dog, and a growling tummy. This meat sauce was so filling, and made the whole house smell so good! With just a bit of prep work it was honestly so easy. I served it over half of a spaghetti squash - which by the way, I swear you should win an award if you can get into one! It was a workout and a half just to get into it! But the end result was something amazing! I think I will be buying one a week and subbing it in instead of pasta for me!

Slow Cooker Meat Sauce

Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 8 hours

Ingredients (6 servings (1 cup))
  • 1 lb hamburger
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 (14oz) can tomato sauce
  • 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp garlic
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp parsley
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add onion and carrot to pan; sauté 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; sauté 1 minute, stirring constantly. Place vegetable mixture in a 6-quart slow cooker.
Add beef to skillet; sauté 6 minutes or until browned, stirring to crumble.
To remove the excess grease, strain the beef in a colandar. Add beef mixture to slow cooker.
Stir remaining ingredients into slow cooker. Cover and cook on LOW 8 hours.
